Linkable Title Html and Php Widget

Using this wordpress plugin you may have Text, HTML, Javascript, Flash and/or Php as content in the widget (just like the text widget) with linkable/clickable widget titles, so this is a plus compared to the default wordpress’ text widget.

What you need to use this plugin:

Requires a WordPress (Version: 2.8.0 or higher) powered website (blog)
A sidebar to place the widget (obviously)
Tested up to: 3.1.1

How to use it?

Installing should be a piece of cake and take fewer than five minutes.
  1. Download it
  2. Extract all files from the zip archive
  3. Copy the linkable-title-html-and-php-widget folder to wp-content/plugins/
  4. Activate the plugin through the “Plugins” menu in wordpress
  5. Add the widget to the sidebar and configure the options as desired
That’s it!

    Hi,

I’ve added your plugin on a wordpress 2.8.6 installation.

When I have added something in the widget box and then press save it clears all the input fields and therefore it show an empty widget on the blog.

    Regards,
    Léon

    Hi PepLamb

I just put your widget on a test site and have a question for you.

I can’t seem to format the sentences the way I want to. Have tried using and not using ‘automatically format paragraphs’ as well as ‘pushing’ the text onto the next line using the space bar.
Below is what I want to happen.

    Would you like to…….

Increase the participation level of every meeting?
Increase the engagement level of every meeting?
Increase the enthusiasm level of every meeting?
Increase the insights gained at every meeting?

And here is what is showing up.

    Would you like to……..

Increase the participation level of your meetings? Increase the engagement level of your meetings? Increase the enthusiasm level of your meetings? Increase the insights gained at your meetings?

Any ideas on how to format the text?

On a positive note, I have been looking for a widget that I could embed my Zenfolio (foto site) slideshows with and guess what?

Yours works very nicely. Wasn’t expecting to solve that dilemma with this widget.

    Thanks
    Tom

      Hi Tom :)
I come up with this solution, can you try this?

Would you like to…….< br />
      < br />
Increase the participation level of every meeting?< br />
Increase the engagement level of every meeting?< br />
Increase the enthusiasm level of every meeting?< br />
Increase the insights gained at every meeting?

in < br / > remove the spaces, this should work!
I’ll look into the automatic issue, but this fix will work with or without auto-formatting :)

        Hi PepLamb

        Still not working.

        I copied and pasted:

        Would you like to…….

Increase the participation level of every meeting?
Increase the engagement level of every meeting?
Increase the enthusiasm level of every meeting?
Increase the insights gained at every meeting?

This is with the spaces removed…..I think….Don’t know anything about code….

        Thanks for the reply.

        Tom

PS. A suggestion. Allow automatic email follow-ups to posts. I don’t want to miss anything good. :>)

In my previous post I included the html characters but they don’t show when I posted the reply. Hey, is that why you used the spaces in your post? I just might be learning something here. Amazing.

Here it is again with spaces.

    Would you like to…….

Increase the participation level of every meeting?
Increase the engagement level of every meeting?
Increase the enthusiasm level of every meeting?
Increase the insights gained at every meeting?

      hi Tom,
can you shw me the website i can help you directly or you just have to use < b r / > the br tag with no spaces in it and it should work, yep i put the spaces here because the application thinks its html and it give a line break as an output, so in simple words use line break meaning the br tag for new lines it will fix :)

Thank you SO MUCH for this plugin. This NEEDS to be part of the WordPress core. I will donate as soon as I finish and get paid on my current project.

One suggestion though, is you might think about using CSS and making the whole widget header block a clickable area rather than just the text. You know, more like a button? Anyway, I’m not at all complaining! I searched for something like this for a LONG time. Thank you.

Great Plugin that I was looking for!
Weird that WP does not include this ….

Anyway. The box to check “add paragraph…” does not work for me. I have to either use a or to have a paragraph (the first one gives me a smaller font, the later, more space between paragraphs, but a bigger font).

The box for paragraph works well with the WP text box …

        No prob. Will update.

In the meantime, I just add a at the beginning of a text/link – and that is not a big issue, so no worries :)

What is mots important is to be able to link the title of the box, which you provided from the start!

First I wanted to say that this is a great plugin, very useful and straightforward and I was going to use it on my site to display custom fields. I worked out a very nice bunch of php code that calls up the contents of the custom fields and displays them as links to searches for more posts with those same custom field values. I worked perfectly.
However, I just upgraded to WordPress 3.0 and the code gives me errors saying that the code is invalid. I checked the syntax and everything, in fact identical code put elsewhere in the theme works just fine. Therefore, there must be something wrong with this plugin’s compatibility with wordpress 3.0. I would greatly appreciate it if you would look into it! Feel free to email me if you want some specifics about what php code is giving errors. Thanks!

Hi, I have a pretty weird problem.

I designed a wp-site locally and used your plugin.
Uploaded the site to an online test site – did all the stuff, backup, fresh wp install, export and changed database, but the one and only thing that doesn’t seem to work is your plugin.
I mean it does work if I add NEW linkable text/php widgets, but the ones from my local site are gone.
I checked the options table and did find the widgets, in option “sidebar_widgets”. All the other sidebar widgets show up – except yours.

Very stange – do you have any idea’s?

    Great idea for a widget!

It seems to be acting strangely on my site however. If I add a URL as intended, then the font size becomes huge and the column title gets distorted and inconsistent (like a different header size or something). If I just use it without a URL, it appears fine.

Any idea what is causing this? Am I doing something wrong?

    Hello again peplamb,

A strange thing has happened. After I posted that last post. I deactivated the plugin. And then fully removed it from my plugins folder. Yet when ever I now make a new Test wigjets for my side bar I get the same effect. It is as if the plugin is still functioning, but I have fully removed it. Also the text wigjets continues to link to the same link, all of them.

Any Ideas how I can get it out of my blog?

    Hi,

I hope my post was clear, the problem is that the plug-in seems to have overwritten or corrupted the regular “Text widget”. I have fully removed it, but when I try to put a regular “Text widget” in the same spot it gives me the same result…I will say that so far it is only if I put the text widget in the same order on the side bar, but I need it last, yet I can not get it to behave normally anymore….any ideas? Do I need to replace an original file from the original theme? And if so can you tell me which file houses the widgets? (and by replacing the file will i loose any of the site? )

thanks you for your help, also possible this bug will help with development as well. You seem like a very nice person as I read through all posts first before adding mine.

  27. Gary
    Posted March 29, 2011 at 7:23 am | Permalink

    Hello again,

Well I’ve tried again this morning to fix the problem. The plug-in is completely removed and any Widgets I use in the side bar takes on your plug in function. So if I put categories, custom menu, meta, any of them, they all become links to the same link. No matter what I do, even with your plug-in removed.

Hopefully I will only have to replace an original file from the template to correct this.
But I don’t know which one is responsible for the widgets.

The original files in my theme are these.
    404.php
    archive.php
    comments.php
    footer.php
    functions.php
    header.php
    index.php
    not-found.php
    page.php
    screenshot
    search.php
    sidebar.php
    single.php
    style.css

Please help as I can not publish my page with this problem and cannot continue to develop it.
    Thanks, Gary

    Hello,

Thank you for getting back to me. I only have one plugin active and it is for creating columns in a page. If you go to my page and scroll down on the right to just below the calendar you will see a widget which is the “archives” widget (not even the text one), any widget that I put in the side bar now becomes linked to the same link with the same functions.

    WP Widget Cache

Cache the output of your blog widgets. Usually it will significantly reduce the SQL queries to your database and speed up your site.

I’ve been looking up widget cache and found:

There’re some widgets that should not be cached!!
    Some widgets are dynamic,
If you use such dynamic widgets, don’t worry, just left the cache expire time field empty or 0, which will prevent the WP Widget Cache to do anything.

Although so far I have been unable to find the widget cache.

As said earlier it is nothing to do with the plugin but the cache issue Gary, you MUST disable any cache plugins disable “WP Widget Cache” don’t use it if you use it you will face the cache problem if the plugin has any option to clear the cache please go for it if you still face problems give me the access to your blog and i will look into it.

Thank you for responding. I will give you access to my account as the problem has not been solved.

    Here’s the update.
I just spent one hour with tech support, they deleted my entire account.
Please understand the entire account was deleted. Not a single file left.
    I reinstalled word-press from scratch.
I rebuild the front page of my site. And still the function of your plug in remains.

They checked for any type of cash and found none.
Please take a look at my account, don’t worry about messing anything up as I will probably redo it again.

Note: The problem is above and below the calendar in the right sidebar.
and only it seems in this area, any widget I place in this area takes on your plug in characteristics.

You had problems in your html code in the widgets
1). never have body tags in the widgets
2). always end your anchor tags, you didn’t end them
3). always end the img tags, they are self closing tags

    PS:

It looks different in both browsers, I uninstalled both fire-fox and IE and reinstalled them.

I use Firefox, where the problem is more obvious.

Thank you so much, I am not sure what you did? It was just code? Not a cache problem? At any rate I really appreciate it. I should have had you look at it 2 days ago!

    Thank you again very much,

    Hi there,

I have installed your plugin however when I try to place the widgets in (replacing current plain text widgets), they do not carry the styling from my site’s custom theme.

At the moment they look like this (see screenshot at: http://www.accessoryheaven.com.au/stock_images/screenshot-footer-wrong.JPG)
But needs to look like this: http://www.accessoryheaven.com.au/stock_images/screenshot-footer-right.JPG

I assume it needs some custom CSS styling…? But I’m not sure how to do this.

The current CSS for my footer (which works perfectly with the normal ‘text box’ widgets), is below:

Also, the current contents of my functions.php for that section (if relevant) is:

__( ‘Footer Widget Area’, ‘twentyten’ ),
    ‘id’ => ‘footer-widget-area’,
‘description’ => __( ‘The footer widget area’),
    ‘before_widget’ => ”,
    ‘after_widget’ => ”,
    ‘before_title’ => ”,
    ‘after_title’ => ”,
    ) );

Woops, that code didn’t show up properly:

why do you think thats a good Idea? you could do that with no title and having all your text or images in the widget wrapped around the anchor tag that would do it

    Hi,
I wanted to make my text widget title linkable, so I uploaded your plugin. But under the linkable title, I want to see all the pages I uploaded to the website on the sidebar. (like Pages feature of wordpress).

Can you please help me with this?

      Hey Nazli,

I am not sure what you are asking about what do you mean by Pages feature in the widget? you can always insert any link there absolutely any link it can be a Page, Post, Category Page, Tag Page, Search Result Page, or any external page you just have to drop a link ( a url ) there :)

      Hope this helps!

    Hey Brenda,

    What i meant is this,
1). do not have a title for the widget
2). place an image or text in the widget
    3). surround step 2 with an anchor tag (a <a href="A URL HERE">SOME TEXT OR IMAGE</a>).
    Thanks it :)

if this is not what you are looking for could you give me an example of what you need?

Glad you like the plugin Jane :)
Right now it takes from the Theme’s CSS and you have no control over the title as it doesn’t have a class or an id to add custom CSS to your theme, if you had control over the title the CSS you would be adding will be
      text-decoration: underline;
If you need this feature I will add it in the next release probably this weekend fine Jane?

Love your plugin, however I keep running into an issue with validation, and Im not sure the culprit ( started off with 50+ errors, and the last 8 are from this widget) Ive tried cleaning up everything I can think of, but its still giving me :

document type does not allow element “li” here; missing one of “ul”, “ol”, “menu”, “dir” start-tag

I think you should warp your elements in a css class or id. Call me crazy, but I want to hide the widget title. Now wouldn’t that be a cool feature to add in; maybe an additional checkbox where checking the box add style=”display: none;”. Of course you would have to have a css class or div to target.

Not complaining. I love what you’ve created. I even enjoyed the music on your site!

I could use some help with your Widget. I’m new to WordPress and am just trying recently to build a website. I’m totally stuck on a couple of things. First, I might be misunderstanding the functionality of your Widget. I thought that I could use it to turn my site title (in this case Join GIN Now!) into a clickable link to the main GIN Website. I don’t think I’m using it correctly. I’ve put it in the sidebar but nothing seems to be happening when I try to use it. Maybe it makes a linkable page title and I’m misunderstanding it’s functionality?

Also, this isn’t a question about your Widget, but I would be forever in your debt if you could help me out. I don’t want the comment or blog or whatever you call it on my Home page or other pages except my Forum Page. I’ve tried using the fix suggested in the Codex–i.e. setting the home page as a static page in the settings reading section and setting my forum page default for posts but it doesn’t seem to be working. The home page and the other page all display a comment section and I don’t want that. I just want static content on my other pages and I can’t seem to figure out what I’m doing wrong. When I uploaded this theme, it didn’t come with a sample page and I just want plain pages on my site except for the forum page.

I would have posted this question in the regular WordPress forum but I can’t log in for some reason. It keeps asking me to reset my password or claims it doesn’t recognize my username.

I really hope you can help me, I’m totally stuck. Any information you have would be very much appreciated!

Hope you have a great day!

I am madly in love with you! Seriously! It worked! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I couldn’t figure out how to get the comments off the page and misunderstood the terminology a bit I think. I read and re-read the instructions and was completely stumped. I didn’t see that Screen Options button. Anyways, I’m so relieved.

I’m temporarily strapped for cash but will definitely try to send you something as soon as I can.

You’re so kind. Thank you so much and I love the tunes on this site. It’s pretty good music. Positive Alternative music. Who knew?

Could you let me know what version of wordpress you are using? In case your wordpress is version 3 or above you will find ‘Screen Options’ (to the top right corner) when you are editing your post or page.

Steps again in detail to disable comments of a given post or page in WordPress
1). Just click on it and it should drop down, then you must check ‘Discussions‘ once you do that Discussions field containing two check boxes will appear just below your post or page edit content area.
2). Uncheck ‘Allow comments‘ and comments will be disabled for that post or page,
3). Update the post or page you are editing and comments will be disabled :)

Glad you like the songs they are airing from air1 radio, and correct most of them are Alternative genre.

    hi,

Awesome plugin, can’t fault it in anyway apart from the following part of code,

    $text”.$text.”

We are now monitoring all Eval PHP Functions on our servers and letting you no about this, on line 45 in file (linkable-title-html-and-php-widget.php)

It is such a great plugin and don’t want it turning up on everyone’s wordpress scans as a threat,

    Many Thanks..

This is interesting though, the plugin needs to have eval function to execute php script in the widget, hmmmm, will think about it and come up with a solution ( i cannot think of any alternative so far though )

First of all, thanks for an absolutely invaluable plugin. I use it on just about every site I have :)

I am trying to make the widget title itself style-able. I understand that WP strips that outside of theme files, however I was reading this article and tried it meself. It went poorly LOL.

I would be stoked to see this in a future version! Keep up the great work mate!
