Would you like to see how John 3:16 reads in the King James Version, NIV, and ESV all at once?
At bible.peplamb.com, the Parallel Bible Study feature displays up to 4 different Bible translations side-by-side in organized columns. Whether you're preparing a sermon, leading a Bible study, or deepening your personal walk with God, this feature helps you explore the richness of God's Word from multiple perspectives.
2 Timothy 3:16 tells us, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." God's Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), and each faithful translation illuminates His truth from a slightly different angle. Think of it like facets on a diamond catching the light.
Why Compare Different Bible Translations?
The Bible wasn't written in English. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew (with some Aramaic), and the New Testament was written in Greek. Every English translation makes choices about how to express these ancient languages in ways we can understand today.
Different translations serve different purposes:
Literal translations like ESV, NASB1995, and NKJV stay close to the original Hebrew and Greek word order and structure. They prioritize accuracy to the source text.
Balanced translations like NIV1984 and NIVUK aim for both accuracy and readability. They translate thought-for-thought while staying true to the original meaning.
Simplified translations like ICB (International Children's Bible) express biblical truths in clear, contemporary English. They're helpful for new believers, children, and everyday reading.
Historic translations like KJV and the 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV) preserve the language that has shaped Christian tradition for centuries.
When you compare these side-by-side, you can:
- See the depth and richness of God's Word more fully
- Grasp the full meaning from multiple perspectives
- Verify understanding across trusted translations
- Gain insights you'd miss reading just one version
Understanding Scripture's Clarity
The Bible is God's clear revelation to humanity (Psalm 119:105, 2 Peter 1:19-21). When we compare translations, we're not correcting unclear Scripture. We're exploring the depth and richness of what God has already revealed perfectly. Each faithful translation captures the same divine truth using different English expressions. The challenge isn't in God's Word, which is perfect and sufficient (Psalm 19:7-11), but in our limited human understanding, which the Holy Spirit illuminates as we study (1 Corinthians 2:12-14).

Method 2: Using the Parallel Bible Study Dialog
This method lets you build your parallel study interactively.
Step-by-Step:
- Go to the website
Navigate to bible.peplamb.com - Find the Parallel Bible Study button
Look for the toolbar near the top of the page. Click the button with the collection icon (📚), which looks like stacked books. This opens the "Parallel Bible Study" dialog box. - Enable Parallel Bible Study
At the top of the dialog, you'll see a toggle switch labeled "Switch to Parallel Bible Study." Click the switch to turn it ON. The page will adjust to show your Bible in column format. - Select your first additional version
You'll see a dropdown menu labeled "Select Bible Version." Click the dropdown and choose your desired translation (like "New King James Version"). You can also use the search box to type the version name. - Add the version
After selecting a version, click the + (plus) button. The version will appear in the list below. You'll now see two Bible versions displayed side-by-side. - Add more versions (optional)
Repeat steps 4-5 to add a third or fourth version. You can add up to 4 versions total. Each new version creates an additional column. - Remove a version (if needed)
In the list of selected versions, you'll see each one with a - (minus) button next to it. Click the minus button to remove that version from your study. Note: You cannot remove the main (first) version. - Reorder your versions (drag and drop)
Click and hold on a version name in the list, then drag it up or down to change the order. The columns on the page will rearrange to match your new order. The first version stays fixed. You can only reorder the additional versions. - Close the dialog
Click the "Close" button at the bottom. Your parallel study setup is saved and ready.
Customizing Your Study Experience
Adding Bible Versions
From the Parallel Bible Study Dialog:
- Click the Parallel Bible Study button (📚) in the toolbar
- Use the dropdown menu under "Select Bible Version"
- You can scroll through the full list or type in the search box to find a specific version quickly (type "International" to find ICB, "French" to find LSG)
- Click on your desired version to select it
- Click the + button to add it
- The new translation appears immediately in a new column
Maximum Versions: You can display up to 4 Bible translations at once. The + button will be disabled (grayed out) when you reach the maximum or if you try to add a version that's already selected.
Loading Animation: When you add a new Bible version, you may see animated "loading skeletons" (pulsing gray placeholders) appear in the new column while the Bible text loads. This prevents the page from jumping around. The verse text will appear once loading is complete, usually within a few seconds.
Removing Versions
- Open the Parallel Bible Study dialog
- Look at the "Parallel Bible Versions" table
- Find the version you want to remove
- Click the - (minus) button next to it
- That version's column will disappear
You cannot remove the first/main version. If you want to change the main version, select a different Bible version from the main version selector on the page.
Reordering Columns (Drag and Drop)
You can change the order in which Bible versions appear on the screen:
- Open the Parallel Bible Study dialog
- In the "Parallel Bible Versions" table, click and hold on a version name
- Drag it up or down in the list
- Release to drop it in the new position
- The columns on your screen will rearrange to match
Example:
Before:
[Column 1: KJV] [Column 2: NIV] [Column 3: ESV]
After dragging NIV to the third position:
[Column 1: KJV] [Column 2: ESV] [Column 3: NIV]
Tip: Put your favorite translation in the second position (right after the main version) for easier reading.
Navigation Modes: How to Move Between Verses
The Parallel Bible Study feature gives you two ways to navigate when you click "Next" or "Previous."
Option 1: Maintain Column Position (Default)
When you click "Next" or "Previous," the system remembers which column (translation) you were reading and keeps you in that same column when moving to the new verse.
How it works:
- You're reading John 3:16 in the second column (NIV)
- You click "Next"
- The page moves to John 3:17, and your focus stays in the second column (NIV)
This option works well for continuous reading in one preferred translation while having others available for reference.
Option 2: Reset to First Column
When you click "Next" or "Previous," the system always brings you back to the first column, regardless of which translation you were reading.
How it works:
- You're reading John 3:16 in the third column (ESV)
- You click "Next"
- The page moves to John 3:17, and focus resets to the first column (KJV)
This option works well for systematically reading through a passage in your main translation first, then comparing with others.
How to Choose Your Navigation Mode:
- Open the Parallel Bible Study dialog
- Scroll down to the "Navigation Mode" section
- You'll see two radio buttons:
- "Maintain column position" (Continue from the same column)
- "Reset to first column" (Always start from first column)
- Click on your preferred option
- Close the dialog. Your choice is saved automatically.
Repeat Settings: For Memorization
Want to hear each verse multiple times to help with memorization? The repeat feature plays each verse several times before moving to the next one.
How to Set It:
- Open the Parallel Bible Study dialog
- Find the "Repeat verse" section
- You'll see a number input box showing the current repeat count (default is 1)
- Use the up/down arrows or type a number between 1 and 7
- Example: If you set it to 3, each verse will play three times before advancing
When It Happens:
In parallel study mode, the system plays through all the selected versions for each verse repetition.
Example with 3 versions (KJV, NIV, ESV) and Repeat set to 2:
- John 3:16 - KJV (first time)
- John 3:16 - NIV (first time)
- John 3:16 - ESV (first time)
- John 3:16 - KJV (second time)
- John 3:16 - NIV (second time)
- John 3:16 - ESV (second time)
- Then moves to John 3:17
This feature helps with Scripture memory work, meditation on specific passages, and deep study of important verses.
Delay Settings: For Meditation and Reflection
Add a pause between verses to give yourself time to reflect, take notes, or meditate on what you've just heard.
How to Set It:
- Open the Parallel Bible Study dialog
- Find the "Delay" section
- You'll see a number input box showing seconds (default is 0)
- Use the up/down arrows or type a number between 0 and 30 seconds
- Example: If you set it to 5, there will be a 5-second pause before the next verse plays
When the Delay Happens:
The delay occurs after all versions of a verse have been played, before moving to the next verse.
Example with 2 versions and 5-second delay:
- Psalm 23:1 - KJV (plays audio)
- Psalm 23:1 - NIV (plays audio)
- [5-second pause for reflection]
- Psalm 23:2 - KJV (plays audio)
- Psalm 23:2 - NIV (plays audio)
- [5-second pause for reflection]
This works well for devotional reading where you want to contemplate each verse, journaling while listening, prayer after each verse, and teaching situations where you need time to discuss.
Combining Repeat and Delay:
You can use both settings together. For example:
- Repeat: 2
- Delay: 10 seconds
This would play each verse twice across all versions, then pause for 10 seconds before the next verse.

Step 3: Enable Parallel Bible Study At the very top of the dialog, you'll see a toggle switch next to "Switch to Parallel Bible Study." Click the switch to turn it ON. The page behind the dialog will adjust slightly.
Step 4: Select Your First Additional Translation In the dialog, find the dropdown menu labeled "Select Bible Version." Click the dropdown, then scroll or type "New King" in the search box. Click on "New King James Version (NKJV)".
Step 5: Add the First Version Right next to the dropdown, click the + (plus) button. You'll see "New King James Version" appear in a table under "Parallel Bible Versions." You now have 2 versions set up.
Step 6: Add Your Second Additional Translation Click the "Select Bible Version" dropdown again. Search for or scroll to "English Standard Version (ESV)". Click on it, then click the + (plus) button again. Now you'll see both NKJV and ESV in the "Parallel Bible Versions" table. You now have 3 versions total.
Step 7: (Optional) Reorder If Desired If you want to change the order of the columns, click and drag the version names in the table.
Step 8: Set Up Meditation Settings Scroll down in the dialog to find "Repeat verse." Leave it at 1 (or set it to 2 if you want to hear each verse twice). Find the "Delay" section below that. Set it to 5 seconds to give you time to reflect on each verse.
Step 9: Review Navigation Mode Scroll down to "Navigation Mode." Select "Maintain column position" if you plan to read primarily in one translation, or "Reset to first column" if you want to always start from the first version.
Step 10: Close the Dialog Click the "Close" button at the bottom. Your parallel study setup is now active.
Part 2: Loading and Reading Psalm 23
Step 11: Enter the Bible Reference Look at the top of the page for the reference input box. Click in that box and type Psalm 23
(or Ps 23
).
Step 12: Load the Passage Look for a "Play" button, "Go" button, or press Enter on your keyboard.
Step 13: View Your Parallel Study The page now displays Psalm 23 in three columns:
- Column 1: Your main Bible version (like KJV)
- Column 2: New King James Version (NKJV)
- Column 3: English Standard Version (ESV)
Each verse appears in all three translations simultaneously.
What You'll See (Example for Psalm 23:1):
KJV | NKJV | ESV |
---|---|---|
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." | "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." | "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." |
Step 14: Navigate Through the Psalm Use the Next and Previous buttons to move through the verses. Each click shows the next verse in all three translations. Notice how the wording differs slightly between versions. If you set up a 5-second delay, there will be a pause between verses.
Step 15: Compare and Study Read each verse across the three translations. Notice where they're similar (showing consistent meaning). Notice where they differ (offering different nuances). Take notes on insights you gain.
Example Comparison (Psalm 23:4):
- KJV: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil..."
- NKJV: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil..."
- ESV: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil..."
Notice the ESV places "valley" before "shadow," slightly shifting the emphasis.
Part 3: Adjusting Your Study
If You Want to Add Another Version: Click the Parallel Bible Study button (📚) again, select another version (like International Children's Bible), and click the + button. Now you'll have 4 columns.
If You Want to Remove a Version: Click the Parallel Bible Study button (📚), find the version in the table, and click the - (minus) button next to it.
If You Want to Study a Different Passage: Simply type a new reference in the reference box (like John 3:16-21
) and press Enter. The new passage loads in all your selected translations.
Part 4: Sharing Your Study
To Share This Exact Setup: Look at your browser's address bar. The URL should look something like:
https://bible.peplamb.com/?v=KJV,NKJV,ESV&r=Ps23
Copy this entire URL and send it via email, text, or group chat. When others click the link, they'll see Psalm 23 in the same three translations.
Practical Tips for Better Bible Study
Mix Translation Types
Don't just compare similar translations. Mix different types:
Recommended Combination:
- Literal Translation (ESV, NASB1995, NKJV) for accuracy to original text
- Balanced/Modern (NIV1984, NIVUK) for clarity and readability
- Simplified English (ICB) for fresh, simple perspective
- Historic (KJV, GNV) for traditional language and heritage
Example Setup:
https://bible.peplamb.com/?v=ESV,NIVUK,ICB&r=Romans8:28
This gives you precision (ESV), clarity (NIVUK), and contemporary simplicity (ICB) all at once.
Use Repeat for Scripture Memorization
Set the Repeat feature to 3 or more when memorizing verses:
- Open Parallel Bible Study dialog
- Set "Repeat verse" to 3-5
- Set "Delay" to 3-5 seconds between repetitions
- Listen to the verse multiple times
- During the delay, try reciting it from memory
This helps you hide God's Word in your heart (Psalm 119:11).
Save Your Favorite Combinations as Bookmarks
When you find a translation combination you love, save the URL as a browser bookmark:
- Set up your preferred translations
- Navigate to a passage
- Copy the URL from the address bar
- Bookmark it with a name like "My Parallel Study"
- Next time, just click the bookmark
Use the Delay Feature for Journaling
Set a longer delay (15-30 seconds) to give yourself time to write notes:
- Set "Delay" to 20 seconds
- Play through a passage
- After each verse, use the pause to journal:
- What stood out to you?
- What differences did you notice between translations?
- What is God speaking to you through this verse?
Start Simple, Then Add More
If you're new to parallel study, don't overwhelm yourself:
Week 1: Use just 2 versions (like KJV + NIV). Get comfortable with the interface and notice basic differences.
Week 2: Add a third version (like ESV). Start seeing patterns across multiple translations.
Week 3+: Add a fourth version or try different combinations. Experiment with paraphrases and versions in other languages if available.
Study Important Passages in Depth
Parallel study helps when you want deeper insight into key Scripture:
When you want to grasp the fullness of a passage:
- Set up 3-4 different translations
- Read the passage in each translation
- Notice how each translation expresses the same divine truth
- Ask the Holy Spirit to illumine your understanding of God's Word
Example: Philippians 4:13 reveals different nuances across translations, helping you see the full richness of Paul's message.
Study Key Words Across Versions
Pick an important word and see how different translations render it:
Example: "Love" in 1 Corinthians 13
- KJV uses "charity" (older English for love)
- Modern versions use "love"
- Some paraphrases expand the concept with additional descriptive words
This helps you understand the full meaning of the original Greek or Hebrew.
Create Thematic Studies
Use parallel study to explore themes across different passages:
Example: God's Faithfulness
- Set up your preferred 3 translations
- Create a list of verses on faithfulness:
- Lamentations 3:22-23
- 2 Timothy 2:13
- Psalm 89:8
- Go through each passage in parallel view
- Notice how different translations emphasize aspects of God's faithful character
Use for Sermon or Teaching Prep
Pastors and teachers can prepare richer messages:
- Choose your sermon passage
- Set up 3-4 translations
- Note where translations differ (these are often points of theological interest)
- Explain these nuances in your teaching
- Share the URL with your congregation for their own study
Compare Old and New Testament Quotes
The New Testament frequently quotes the Old Testament. Use parallel study to compare:
Example:
- Read Isaiah 40:3 in three translations
- Then read Matthew 3:3 (which quotes Isaiah 40:3)
- See how the Gospel writer applies the Old Testament prophecy
This reveals connections throughout Scripture.
How Different Groups Can Use This Feature
Personal Devotions
Gain richer, more nuanced insights from familiar passages. Refresh your understanding of verses you've read many times. Discover new angles on God's Word that speak to your current situation.
Suggested Setup:
- 2-3 translations (don't overwhelm your quiet time)
- Set a 5-10 second delay for reflection
- Use "Maintain column position" to stay focused
This works well for morning devotions, evening Scripture meditation, and Lectio Divina practice.
Small Group Bible Studies
Everyone in the group can see the same translations simultaneously. This facilitates discussion: "In the NIV it says this, but in ESV it says this slightly differently." It ensures everyone sees the same passages when group members have different versions.
Suggested Setup:
- 3-4 translations to generate discussion
- Share the URL with group members before the meeting
- Project on a screen if meeting in person
- Set Delay to 0 for group control of pacing
This works for weekly small groups, Sunday school classes, home Bible studies, and online study groups.
Sermon and Teaching Preparation
Verify the meaning of your preaching text across trusted translations. Find illustrations by noting translation differences. Ensure theological accuracy in your teaching. Provide your congregation with multiple perspectives.
Suggested Setup:
- 4 translations covering different approaches
- Keep the URL handy for quick reference while writing
- Share the link in your sermon notes or bulletin
- No delay needed (you're reading, not listening)
This helps pastors preparing weekly messages, Bible teachers developing lessons, Christian educators creating curriculum, and conference speakers researching topics.
Scripture Memorization
Hear verses multiple times in different wordings (aids retention). Choose which translation is easiest for you to memorize. Compare to ensure you understand what you're memorizing.
Suggested Setup:
- 2 translations (your memorization version + one for comparison)
- Set Repeat to 3-5
- Set Delay to 5-10 seconds to practice recall
- Use "Reset to first column" to always start with your memory verse version
This helps with Scripture memory programs, teaching children to memorize verses, and preparing for public speaking or testimony.
Word Studies
See how a Greek or Hebrew word is translated differently. Understand the range of meaning in the original language. Identify key terms that are rendered with multiple English words.
Suggested Setup:
- 3-4 literal translations (ESV, NASB1995, NKJV, and one from KJV or GNV)
- Focus on passages where you've noticed translation differences
- Cross-reference with a Strong's Concordance or interlinear Bible
This helps seminary students, serious Bible students without Greek/Hebrew training, and pastors doing exegetical work.
Family Devotions
Choose one simple, clear translation for children. Include a more literal version for discussion. Teach children that God's Word can be understood in different ways.
Suggested Setup:
- 2-3 translations: one simple (ICB), one traditional (KJV/NKJV), one modern (NIV1984 or NIVUK)
- Keep verses short for young attention spans
- Use the Repeat feature to help children hear verses multiple times
- Set a short Delay for asking questions
This works for family altar time, bedtime Bible reading, and teaching children to study Scripture.
Evangelism and Outreach
Choose a translation that's most accessible to seekers. Have other versions ready if someone has questions. Show that the Bible's message is consistent across translations.
Suggested Setup:
- Start with 1 clear, modern translation (NIVUK, NIV1984, or ICB)
- Add a second if discussing with someone from a KJV-only background
- Use simple passages (Gospel of John, Psalms, Proverbs)
- Share easy-to-remember URLs
This helps with evangelistic Bible studies, coffee shop conversations about faith, and prison ministry.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Bible translations can I view at once? You can view up to 4 Bible translations simultaneously. This provides a good balance between comprehensive comparison and readability.
Can I use this feature on my phone or tablet? Yes. The parallel Bible study feature works on all devices: desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. On smaller screens, the columns will stack vertically for easier reading.
Will my settings be saved when I close the browser? Yes. Your parallel Bible study settings (enabled/disabled, selected versions, repeat, delay, navigation mode) are saved in your browser's local storage. When you return to the site, your preferences will be remembered.
Can I print a parallel Bible study view? Yes. You can use your browser's print function (File > Print or Ctrl+P / Cmd+P). The parallel columns should print side-by-side on standard paper.
What if my favorite Bible version isn't available? Bible.peplamb.com offers many popular Bible translations. If your preferred version isn't available, it may be due to copyright restrictions or licensing limitations. You can still use similar translations and supplement with your physical Bible.
Can I listen to the audio in parallel mode? Yes. The audio playback feature works with parallel Bible study. When you play a passage, it will read through each selected version in the order you've arranged them, with your repeat and delay settings applied.

Can I compare different passages, not just the same passage in different versions? The parallel Bible study feature is designed to show the same passage across different translations. If you want to compare different passages (like comparing a prophecy in Isaiah with its fulfillment in Matthew), you would need to use multiple browser tabs or windows.
What's the difference between "literal" and "balanced" translations?
Literal translations (ESV, NASB1995, NKJV) translate word-for-word from the original Hebrew and Greek as closely as possible. They prioritize accuracy to the original text structure.
Balanced translations (NIV1984, NIVUK) translate thought-for-thought, aiming to convey the original meaning in natural, contemporary English. They balance accuracy with readability.
Simplified translations (ICB) restate biblical ideas in clear, simple contemporary language, prioritizing accessibility. They're helpful for new believers, children, and devotional reading.
Historic translations (KJV, GNV) preserve the traditional language and expressions that have shaped Christian heritage for centuries.
Will this help me understand the Bible better? Yes. Comparing multiple translations helps you:
- See the full range of meaning in the original text
- Gain fuller understanding of God's clear Word
- Catch nuances you'd miss with just one version
- Grow in confidence in the consistency of God's Word across faithful translations
- Discover fresh insights from familiar passages
Parallel study is a tool, not a replacement for the Holy Spirit's illumination. Always pray for wisdom and understanding as you read (James 1:5).
Discover the Riches of God's Word
The Word of God is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). It is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105). Every translation of Scripture is a window into the eternal, unchanging truth of God's revelation to humanity.
The Parallel Bible Study feature at bible.peplamb.com is a tool to explore God's Word more deeply. Whether you're comparing the majestic cadence of the King James Version with the clarity of a modern translation, or exploring how different translations express the same divine truth, this feature helps you study Scripture more thoroughly.
The early church believers in Berea "received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily" (Acts 17:11). They didn't have multiple English translations at their fingertips, but you do.
Getting Started Today

God's Word is a feast, and you're invited to the table.
"The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever." (Isaiah 40:8)
May your study of God's eternal Word bear fruit in your life, now and forevermore. Amen.
